SPES Publications Chair
Purpose
The Publications Chair exists to coordinate activities within the Section related to publications sponsored by the section.
Term of Office
Two years.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the Section Executive Committee.
- Serve as Chair of the Section Publications Committee. This committee consists of the Newsletter Editor(s), the Webmaster, the Publicity Officer and any other publications officers.
- Serve as the SPES representative to ASA committees concerned with Section publication matters.
- Coordinate the publication of the SPES proceedings through ASA. The proceedings include papers from SPES session at the Joint Statistical Meetings, as well as the two conferences co-sponsored by SPES: the Spring Research Conference, and the Fall Technical Conference.
- Appoint editors of Section publications, with the approval of the Executive Committee.
- Work with the Senior Editor, as well as the SPES Associate Editor, for the joint SPES/Q&P Section newsletter (published twice a year).
- Assist the Webmaster in publishing the web page.
- Submit an annual report to the Section Executive Committee.
Additional Activities (Desirable, not Mandatory)
- Attend Section Council meetings at the JSM in August and the Fall Technical Conference in October of each year.
- Attend the Section Publication Officers meetings at the JSM.
- Participate in planning for the Section by contributing ideas via letter and/or attending planning meetings.
- Contribute articles to the newsletter.
Qualifications
- Must be a member of SPES.
- Must be able to commit the time and resources needed to carry out the duties described above.

Calendar
- March/April - Receive mailings from ASA regarding publication of 1997 proceedings. Reply to ASA by late April to confirm that we intend to publish a proceedings for that year, and to set pre-publication and post-publication prices.
- April - Prepare publicity material for proceedings, to be distributed at the Spring Research Conference (SRC), the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) and the Fall Technical Conference (FTC). The ASA office will help prepare these materials.
- April/May - Provide the SRC Chair with a blurb for inclusion in the program book that reminds authors to submit their papers to the proceedings when they receive "how-to" information from ASA in September. Also, ask SRC Chair to provide ASA with mailing labels for all authors.
- May - Return the Proceedings Publication Form to ASA (received in April mailing) that outlines the details of our agreement with ASA to publish proceedings. This document sets forth which papers are eligible, deadlines for submission, etc.
- May-June - Provide the FTC Chair with a blurb for inclusion in the program book that reminds authors to submit their papers to the proceedings when they receive "how-to" information from ASA in September. Also, ask FTC Chair to provide ASA with mailing labels for all authors.
- August - Attend Publications Officers meeting at the JSM.
- September - Be available to handle issues associated with the publication of the proceedings. This includes working with authors who did not receive submission information from ASA, considering exceptions to submission rules (e.g. authors with "SPES-type" papers that were presented in JSM session without a proceedings), and answering questions from ASA.
Election/Appointment Mechanism
The Publications Chair is appointed by the Chair of the Section with consensus of the Executive Committee.
