SPES Past Chair

Purpose

The Past Chair will have served one year as Chair Elect and as Chair the previous year. The primary purpose of the Past Chair is to be a resource to the current Section officers.

A secondary purpose of the Past Chair is to lead the Committee to Nominate Fellows and, more generally, support the renewal of the Section infrastructure.

Term of Office

The term of the Past Chair is one calendar year, January 1 to December 31, immediately following serving as Chair.

Responsibilities

  • Resource
  • Work closely with the Chair to ensure smooth transition of the Section leadership.
  • Participate in communication between JSM and FTC meetings to discuss Section business.
  • General
  • Serve on the Executive Committee of SPES.
  • Attend the Section executive meetings at the JSM in August and the FTC in October (if the strategic planning meeting is held at the FTC).
  • At the end of the term of office, improve this job description and submit to incoming Chair Elect.
  • Deliver an annual report of the Section's activities during the year in which he/she was Chair
  • Chair Committee to Nominate Fellows
  • Draft a Strategic Plan

Additional Activities (Desirable, not Mandatory)

  • Substitute for the Section Chair in attending meetings that conflict with Section Officers meetings.
  • Proactively provide help to the current officers based on experience of past years as an officer.

  • Member of ASA and SPES.
  • Be able to commit to the responsibilities of the job.

Calendar

  • January - Submit SPES Annual Report to ASA.
  • January - Complete any transition of Section information/documents to the new Section Chair.
  • August - Schedule and begin planning strategic planning meeting at the FTC.
  • October - Conduct strategic planning meeting at the FTC.
  • October - Form Committee to Nominate Fellows by serving as Chair and appointing two additional members (preferably one of these members being a current ASA Fellow).
  • November - Create a list of potential candidates for fellow. Useful resources are SPES Membership lists, SPES VIP lists, and the ASA list of Fellows. SPES VIPers and members, along with the Past SPES Chair from the previous year can help suggest good candidates.
  • December - Identify Section members who would be suitable nominees for the honor of Fellow of the Association (as described in the Association By-Laws).
  • December - Coordinate preparation and submission of the nominations or "Identify a person outside the committee to coordinate preparation and submission of each nomination."
  • December - Notify SPES Executive Committee of nomination choice(s).
  • December - At the end of the term of office, improve this job description and submit to incoming Chair-Elect.


Election/Appointment Mechanism
This is a "de facto" appointment, after having served for two years as a Section Officer — one year each as Chair Elect and Chair.
