print
Title

SPES Council of Sections (COS) Representative

Purpose

The COS Representatives are two of the eight Executive Council Members of the Section (together with the Chair-Elect, Past-Chair, Chair, Program Chair, Program Chair-Elect, and Secretary/Treasurer). The COS Representatives are voting members of the Council of Sections, the ASA body that governs sections. Currently SPES has two sitting COS representatives, giving SPES two votes. (As specified in the COS Charter, sections with 100-1000 full members shall have one representative, sections with 1001-2000 full members shall have two representatives, sections with 2001-3000 full members shall have three representatives, and sections with more than 3000 full members shall have four representatives.)

Term of Office

The COS Charter specifies that each section Representative shall serve a three-year term and shall be selected in a manner designated by the section. SPES COS Representatives are elected to a three-year term which begins January 1 of the year following the election.

Responsibilities of COS Representative

  • Attend any Council of Sections meetings at the ASA Joint Statistical Meetings in August of each year. Typically there is a general meeting on Sunday and a feedback meeting on Thursday.
  • Attend the Section Executive Committee meeting at the Joint Statistical Meetings, and give a report on the Council of Sections general meeting. Typically the Council of Sections will ask for Section feedback on various issues and initiatives.
  • Attend the SPES Business Meeting at the Joint Statistical Meetings, and report as appropriate on issues involving the Council of Sections.
  • Participate as a voting member of the SPES Executive Committee.
  • Act throughout the year as a liaison to the member of the Council of Sections Governing Board who represents SPES. The Governing Board meets throughout the year and puts out a call for section concerns before each meeting.
  • At the end of the term of office, improve this job description and submit to incoming Chair-Elect.

Qualifications

  • Must be member of the ASA Section on Physical and Engineering Sciences.
  • Must be able to commit to stated responsibilities; in particular, must have the time and resources needed to attend the Section meetings at the Joint Statistical Meetings and the Fall Technical Conference each year.
  • Should be familiar with all facets of SPES operations. Typical nominees have previously held other SPES offices.

Resources Available

  • ASA Section Officers Handbook
  • SPES Section Operating Manual
  • Charter of the Section on Physical and Engineering Sciences
  • Charter of the Council of Sections
  • Past COS Representatives

Election/Appointment Mechanism
The current Executive Committee is generally polled to suggest names for the Nominating Committee to consider. This committee (Chair, Chair-Elect, and Chair-Elect-Elect) prioritizes the list of candidates for open election positions to identify two willing nominees for the COS Representative position at or around the JSM. The ASA will hold an election the following year, at which time the Section members have the opportunity to vote for either of these two candidates.
