Title

SPES Education Chair

Purpose

The Education Chair exists to identify, develop and carry out activities necessary to meet Section educational objectives.

Term of Office

The initial term of office is two years, with the position being renewed on a yearly basis thereafter. There is no limit to the number of years one could hold the position.

Responsibilities

• Develop and gain approval for at least one SPES sponsored short course at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) each year.
• Undertake one time educational activities at the direction of the Council.
• Participate in the activities of the Section..
• Ensure that all committee activities are congruent with the Section's vision, mission, strategy, and principles.

Additional Activities (Desirable, not Mandatory)

• Attend Section Council meetings at the JSM in August and the Fall Technical Conference in October of each year.
• Participate in planning for the Section by contributing ideas via letter and/or attending planning meetings.
• Contribute articles to the newsletter.

Qualifications

• Must be a member of SPES.
• Must be able to commit the time and resources needed to carry out the duties described above.

Calendar

• Spring / Early Summer - Develop a short course concept for the JSM for one year hence. This includes identifying a subject matter of interest to SPES members and gaining agreement with potential presenters of the short course.
• August (at or just after the JSM) - Secure course proposal materials from ASA.
• October - With the help of the proposed short course authors, complete proposal materials and submit to ASA along with a letter of support.

Election/Appointment Mechanism

The Education Chair is appointed by the Chair of the Section with consensus of the Officers.
