Subject: Mary G. Natrella Scholarship

Dear Stu,

I'd like to invite you to give a 10-minute presentation on Mary Natrella on

Monday, June 26, 2000 in Seattle, Washington, at next year's Quality and

Productivity Research Conference. Your presentation would be right after

dinner, as part of a ceremony in Mary's honor. The ceremony will include

three speakers, Karen Kafadar, someone from NIST, and (hopefully) you,

talking about Mary. I will then offer a plaque (like the one you received

last May at the QPRC in Schenectady, NY) to Mary's husband, Joe Natrella.

We'll finish by awarding two $1,000 scholarships to students for them to

attend the conference. This is the first year the scholarships are awarded.

I append additional information on the scholarships in two articles that

will appear in next January's Amstat News.

I hope you'll be able to go to next year's QPRC, and give the presentation

on Mary.

Best regards,

Veronica Czitrom

MARY G. NATRELLA SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED

Veronica Czitrom

The Quality and Productivity section if the ASA has established the endowed

Mary G. Natrella Scholarship Fund. Each year the fund will award two

students interested in Quality with $1,000 each to attend the Quality and

Productivity Research Conference (QPRC).

The fund originated with a generous contribution by her husband, Joseph V.

Natrella. The fund grew to $20,000 thanks to a contribution by the QPRC

Steering Committee chaired by Jeff Hooper. This endowment will fund one of

the annual $1,000 scholarships, while the other scholarship will be provided

by the QPRC.

The Mary G. Natrella Fund Committee was formed at the Joint Statistical

Meetings in Baltimore last August to decide what to do with the $14,000 the

Q&P section had in Mary's name. The committee members are Veronica Czitrom

(Chair), Karen Kafadar, Eileen Boardman, and LeRoy Franklin (Q&P Treasurer).

Karen worked with Mary during the three years she was at the National Bureau

of Standards (now NIST), and Eileen worked with Mary on several ASA

committees.

Mary worked for thirty-six years at the National Bureau of Standards (now

NIST) before retiring in 1986. She was in great demand as a consultant on

applications of statistical methods in the physical sciences and

engineering, including statistical design of experiments. She also taught

the popular in-house one-semester course, "Statistics of Measurement."

Mary's most important publication was Experimental Statistics (1963). This

book has been used widely in government agencies, industries, and

universities as a text in teaching applications of basic statistical

principles and techniques in the physical sciences and engineering. The

book is the second largest best seller ever published by NIST, and was

reprinted by Wiley in its Selected Government Publications series. It has

been translated into Chinese. Experimental Statistics has been selected for

inclusion in a special compilation of 100 noteworthy publications to

celebrate the NBS/NIST Centennial in 2001. The book is the inspiration for

the Engineering Statistics Internet Handbook, an interactive "hypertext"

book jointly developed by NIST and SEMATECH. The website, at

http://www.nist.gov/stat.handbook , is near completion.

Among other honors and awards, Mary was elected a Fellow of the ASA in 1981

for "distinguished work in ... the methodology of sampling inspection and

compliance testing; and for outstanding contributions as author, teacher,

and consultant." She also received the Commerce Department's Bronze Medal.

Before joining NIST, Mary was the Navy Department sampling expert on the

team that produced the trail-blazing MIL-STD-105A, Sampling Procedures and

Tables for Inspection by Attributions (1950) that was to become the

Government-wide standard for acceptance sampling inspection by attributes.

She was the principal author of the Proceedings, issued as a companion

document to the standard, that gave details of the group's deliberations,

reasons for the decisions reached, for rejection of proposed alternatives,

etc. This unique contribution to the practice of specification- and

standards- writing practice increases acceptance of a standard and reduces

repetition when considering revisions.

Mary was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of

Pennsylvania. She died in 1988, and is survived by her husband, Joseph V.

Natrella, and two daughters, Aileen M. Natrella and Elizabeth S. Natrella.

For information on the Mary G. Natrella scholarships for the Q&P Research

Conference to be held in Seattle, Washington, on June 26-28, 2000, please

refer to the article in Section News, Quality and Productivity Section.

MARY G. NATRELLA SCHOLARSHIPS

FOR SEATTLE QUALITY CONFERENCE

Veronica Czitrom

The Quality and Productivity section has established the endowed Mary G.

Natrella Scholarship to award two students interested in Quality with $1,000

each to attend the yearly Q&P Research Conference. The article "Mary G.

Natrella Scholarship Endowment Established" elsewhere in this issue of

Amstat News provides information on how the fund was established, and on

Mary's career.

This year's QPRC will be held in Seattle, Washington on June 26-28, 2000.

It will be held jointly with the Spring Research Conference on Statistics in

Industry and Technology, sponsored by the SPES section of the ASA and by the

IMS, as the Joint Research Conference on Statistics in Quality, Industry,

and Technology. The joint conference will be hosted by The Boeing Company

on the campus of the University of Washington. The theme of the conference

is Statistical Methods for the New Millennium. Additional conference

information is available at http://www.boeing.com/jrc2000, or by contacting

Rita Lai at rita.a.lai@boeing.com, or Andrew Booker at

andrew.j.booker@boeing.com.

Master's and doctoral students interested in Quality can apply for a Mary G.

Natrella scholarship to attend the conference in Seattle. Women and master's

level students are especially encouraged to apply. The scholarship money

covers conference registration, conference workshops, housing, meals, and

transportation.

To apply for a scholarship, a professor should nominate a promising student

through an email application to czitrom@lucent.com. The student should

provide a short application (around one page long) which includes a

statement of professional goals and courses that support interest in Q&P.

The student's application should include a paragraph from the supporting

professor. Students from the Seattle area are NOT eligible for the Mary G.

Natrella Scholarship, since they can apply for the scholarships provided by

the QPRC (see the conference web site).

The Mary G. Natrella Scholarship applications should be submitted on or

before February 29, 2000. Scholarship winners will be notified by the end

of April. For additional information, please contact Veronica Czitrom at

czitrom@lucent.com, or at (407) 371-7402.

The Mary G. Natrella Fund Committee was formed at the Joint Statistical

Meetings in Baltimore last August. The committee members are Veronica

Czitrom (chair), Karen Kafadar, Eileen Boardman, and LeRoy Franklin (Q&P

Treasurer).
