Meeting Highlights:

1. 2000 Conference Feedback and Financial Results
   • 180 Participants, 21 Students
   • Only 15 feedback surveys returned (see Attachment 5 for analysis)
   • In the future, always hand out feedback surveys in one of the last sessions and specifically give time during the session to complete the survey and collect it
   • Main feedback involved the high temperatures and the lack of A/C in hotels and conference facilities, and some poor presentation and content in contributed papers
   • It looks like approximately an $8K surplus, which would be split between the Spring Research Conference and the Q&P Research Conference
   • Final budget results should be available in about 1 month

1. 2001 Conference
   • The conference dates are May 23, 24, 25, 2001 (Wed-Fri.)
   • The theme of the conference is Industrial Statistics: A Competitive Necessity
   • A web site is up and running (linked to Sematech, Q&P Section, and conference web sites), a brochure is complete and will be handed out at the 2000 conference
   • AMD has agreed to be an industrial sponsor/cohost. The University of Texas has agreed to be the academic cohost, with Tom Sager the UofT representative
   • The Thompson Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin is reserved as the conference venue
   • The suggestion was made to honor Gerry Hahn at the 2001 conference, since Gerry is retiring after 44 years at GE. Possible speakers to honor Gerry would be Roger Hoerl, Bill Meeker, Wayne Nelson and Bill Tucker. Gerry has been contacted by Paul and was honored to be considered. Gerry would want travel and living expenses for himself and his wife. The conference policy is to pay travel and living expenses (plus no registration fee) for the person we are honoring, but we do not pay an honorarium except under the most special circumstances. Also Gerry would be willing to give a presentation at the conference. We hope Gerry will accept this invitation shortly.
   • Jeff Hooper drafted a formal letter to AMD inviting them to be a co-host of the 2001 conference and soliciting a tax-deductible donation to the conference fund ($5000). Paul Tobias reviewed this letter and Paul's suggestions have been incorporated. Jeff Hooper has sent the revised letter off to Steve Porzio for final review before sending the letter to AMD.

1. 2002 Conference
   • The conference dates are June 12, 13 and 14, 2002 (Wednesday - Friday)
   • The conference venue is the Honeywell Learning Center in Morristown, NJ
   • The university partner is not yet firm, Bill will be having discussions this next week with Joe Voekel from RIT, and it is anticipated that if these discussions work out that RIT will be the academic co-sponsor
   • The conference theme is Six Sigma: Process Improvement Opportunities for Business, Education and Research
   • George Box was selected to be honored, but this needs to be checked with George and George's travel schedule. If George is unable to participate in person he could still be honored along the lines that we honored Mary Natrella in Seattle

1. Potential Q&PRC Hosts for the 2003 Conference
   • No decisions on the 2003 host have been made, rather the following companies and/or organizations will be contacted to determine their willingness to host, but with these initial contacts no offers to host will be made.
     • IBM - Paul Tobias , contact not yet made
     • Ford - Jeff Hooper , contact not yet made
     • Eastman Chemical/Virginia Tech - Angie Ness contacted. Virginia Tech is very interested but Eastman Chemical had many questions. Jeff Hooper answered the Eastman questions, but based on these questions Eastman is an unlikely future sponsor. But Virginia Tech is very interested, so Angie will contact Geoff Vining to see if there is another possible industrial co-sponsor in the region.
     • 3M - Bill Hill contacted Pete Jacobs and was referred to Bill Rolfes. Bill Hill is still following up with Fill Rolfes.
     • DoD - Bill Hill will contact Jack Hunter to explore willingness to host
     • A selection will be made on the 2003 host by the September timeframe

1. Potential Changes in Conference Financial Procedures
   • We need to determine if Steve Porzio's actions are BoD or Executive Director driven. Rob Easterling contacted Ray Waller to try to understand the drivers for these recent actions. Ray indicated that while the board is very concerned with ASA financial performance and reducing conference risk and maintaining ASA tax exempt status, there is no formal policy or guidelines from the board or the executive director along the lines being pursued by Steve Porzio.
   • Rob Easterling is working to get this item on the COS agenda at the annual meeting in Indianapolis. If this happens LeRoy and Geoff Vining must brief the Q&P COS representative, and possibly participate in the COS discussion on this topic.
   • Rob Easterling will coordinate with Geoff Vining and LeRoy Franklin on this issue at the annual meeting.
   • Jeff Hooper documented the recommended position of the Steering Committee and has sent this recommendation to Rob Easterling, Max Morris, Geoff Vining, LeRoy Franklin, etc.
