1. Review of Open Actions Items

(items where status has changed or were discussed)

97.01, 97.02, 97.03, 97.16 Jeff is making manual revisions; almost complete.

97.07 Closed

98.04 Discussed (see 1999 conference)

98.05 Closed

98.06 Put in 1999 budget; will be disbursed at the appropriate time.

98.07 Jeff will call Veronica about contact at SEMATECH.

New Action Items

98.08 Combine the 1995, 1997 and 1998 conference participants' list in one EXCEL file.

98.09 Add 1996 participants' list, currently in ASCII format, to the combined 1995, 1997 and 1998 EXCEL file.

2. Review of 1998 Conference

! For future conferences, we still need to concentrate more on marketing.

! Conference made a profit of $113.86

! Workshop took a loss of $848.38; this was mainly due to low fee and cost of instructor's travel. Future workshop fees may be in the range of $200, determined by instructor costs.

! Ai-Chu will call Susan Devlin, ASA, to let her know the conference will cover workshop loss.

! 30 people turned in response forms. The response was very favorable. The majority of participants were satisfied or very satisfied. Only one respondent was not satisfied, but would recommend the conference to others.

! Highlights of the conference will appear in the AMSTAT News.

! Comments were made about the contributed sessions being too short. Possibly allow 25 minutes at future conferences.

! An idea for a session at the 1999 conference: How to present statistical ideas, results and concepts to managers and engineers using a dynamic and interactive approach.

3. 1999 Conference

! Ideas for recognition of Stu Hunter's contribution to the Q&P Conference and Section

! Confer at dinner together with section (Jeff will talk to Veronica about this)

! Testimonials given by key people: George Box, Gerry Hahn, and Jeff

! Ask Stu to be the dinner speaker

! Present Stu with a plaque of gratitude and a very nice gift

Nambe dish engraved (www.nambe.com), etc.

! Theme has changed to: 6-sigma quality: Accomplishments, Opportunities and Challenges.

! There will be two workshops to serve both communities. One will be more technical with statisticians as the primary audience. The other will be for non-statisticians, more concept oriented. The workshops will be 1/2 day. Possible instructors include: Roger Hoerl, Bill Hill, someone from Connecticut Quality Council (out of Hartford, they specialize in training 6-sigma). Fee will be around $100.

! Bill Meeker has agreed to be a speaker.

! Brochures will be handed out at the upcoming ASA JSM in Dallas.

4. 2000 Conference (Joint with SRC)

! Theme: Statistics for the 21st Century

! Need to move the date due to conflict with another conference in Seattle at the same time. Will look into moving it to the first week of June

! In the process of obtaining additional sponsors, possibilities are: Microsoft, StatSci, Weyerhauser, Battelle, Siemens.
