Meeting Highlights:

1. 2000 Conference
   • Currently 151 full price registrations, plus 20 student registrations
   • 12 student scholarships were awarded (no registration fee, dorm rooms paid)
   • 2 of the 12 scholarships were Mary Natrella Scholarships ($1000 plus no registration fee and dorm rooms paid)
   • The conference is projected to have a $2500 surplus, and the workshop a $500 surplus
   • Joe Natrella (transportation paid for) and his daughters and grandchildren are attending the conference and specifically the portion honoring Mary and the announcements of the scholarships and this years winners

1. 2001 Conference
   • The conference dates are May 23, 24, 25, 2001 (Wed-Fri.)
   • The theme of the conference is Industrial Statistics: A Competitive Necessity
   • A web site is up and running (linked to sematech, Q&P Section, and conference web sites), a brochure is complete and will be handed out at the 2000 conference
   • 2 short courses are being considered
   • University housing will be explored along with blocking some hotel rooms
   • AMD has agreed to be an industrial sponsor/cohost. The University of Texas has agreed to be the academic cohost, with Tom Sager the UofT representative
   • AMDs manufacturing facilities are off limits to visitors, so showing an AMD video at the opening plenary session with later tours of the Sematech facilities is being considered
   • The Thompson Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin is reserved as the conference venue
   • The suggestion was made to honor Gerry Hahn at the 2001 conference, since Gerry is retiring after 44 years at GE. Possible speakers to honor Gerry would be Roger Hoerl, Bill Meeker, Wayne Nelson and Bill Tucker
   • We need to get a formal letter to AMD inviting them to be a co-host of the 2001 conference and soliciting a tax deductible donation to the conference fund ($5000). Jeff will get a first draft of the letter to Paul Tobias for review, and it will have to be reviewed with Steve Porzio also

1. 2002 Conference
   • The conference dates are June 12, 13 and 14, 2002 (Wednesday - Friday)
   • The conference venue is the Honeywell Learning Center in Morristown, NJ
   • The university partner is not yet firm, Rutgers is being considered as well as RIT (the RIT contact is Joe Voekel)
   • Fairleigh Dickinson University is being explored for dormitory accomodations
   • The conference theme is Six Sigma: Process Improvement Opportunities for Business, Education and Research
   • The conference is looking to have 3 tracks - Education, Business Cases and Q&P Research
   • George Box was selected to be honored, but this needs to be checked with George and George's travel schedule. Another strong possibiity was Bill Hunter, with Bill's son Jack and Judy Hunter participating
   • Larry Bossidy, the retired CEO of Allied Signal and a major champion of six sigma is being considered as a possible speaker
   • The Honeywell research facilities would be a possible tour
2. Potential Q&PRC Hosts for the 2003 Conference
   • No decisions on the 2003 host have been made, rather the following companies and/or organizations will be contacted to determine their willingness to host, but with these initial contacts no offers to host will be made.
     • IBM - Paul Tobias will contact to explore willingness to host
     • Ford - Jeff Hooper will contact to explore willingness to host
     • Eastman Chemical/Virginia Tech - Angie Ness will contact to explore willingness to host
     • 3M - Bill Hill will contact to explore willingness to host
     • DoD - Bill Hill will contact to explore willingness to host
     • A selection will be made on the 2003 host by the September timeframe
     • Jeff Hooper will update the Potential Sponsors List

1. Potential Changes in Conference Financial Procedures
   • We need to determine if Steve Porzio's actions are BoD or Executive Director driven. Rob Easterling will contact Ray Waller to try to understand the drivers for these recent actions
   • After a detailed discussion of the proposed changes we reached the following conclusions
     • The proposed solution would increase costs and decrease efficiency and effectiveness and are not acceptable to the Q&PRC steering committee and specifically the future organizing committee chairs, who each indicated they would not want to run the conference under these circumstances.
     • The Q&PRC, with the support of the SRC and their respective sections, will seek to maintain the current state which is working fine for both conferences. The Q&PRC would be willing to pay a minimal financial oversight fee to enable the ASA finance office to have increased oversight of conference finances. If this approach does not work then the Q&PRC will separate their finances from ASA finances.
     • In addition to discussing this with Ray Waller we will also contact the Council of Sections to gain their support.
     • Jeff Hooper will document the recommended position of the Steering Committee and get this recommendation to Rob Easterling, Max Morris, Geoff Vining, etc.
