Meeting Highlights:

.

1.Κ 2001 Conference

-         Planning is complete for the 2001 conference, with the eleven invited sessions, 27 φ 30 contributed papers to be delivered in 2-3 concurrent sessions.Κ The call for contributed papers closed last Friday.Κ It is a very strong program.

-         The short course on Tuesday will be given by Wayne Nelson.Κ Wayne will receive partial expense reimbursement.

-         This years registration will allow the use of credit cards, and the registration material will be on the website by the end of the week.Κ

-         Given the healthy nature of our conference fund, 15-20 scholarships will be offered to students nominated by a faculty member.Κ The scholarships will include the registration fee along with accomodations support.

-         A live video camera tour of theΚ AMD wafer fab will be offered Friday afternoon at the close of the conference.

-         The Q&PRC Steering Committee will have its yearly meeting concurrently with the AMD tour on Friday afternoon after the conclusion of the conference.

-         Gerry Hahn has accepted the invitation to be honored at the 2001 conference. Gerry is retiring after 44 years at GE.Κ Speakers to honor Gerry are Wayne Nelson, Bill Meeker, and Roger Hoerl.Κ

-         The formal AMD invitation letter has gone out and been accepted with Steve Porzioβs approval

-         Paul has set up the bank account for the 2001 conference, and $5000 is being transferred to this account from Steve Porzio.

-         Everything now appears on track for the conference.Κ Publicity and registration will be ramping up in the next few months.Κ A big advantage for this conference is that we will be able to use Sematechβs credit card acceptance process.

2.Κ 2002 Conference

-         A major issue has developed with the 2002 conference.Κ Honeywell is being acquired by GE, and since GE was the 1999 conference sponsor, it does not make sense for GE to sponsor the conference again in 2002.

-         Bill Hill has contacted John Rolfes as 3M to see if 3M is interested in hosting the 2002 conference.Κ Jeff Hooper has talked to John Rolfes, and John initially indicated that he was 98% sure 3M would agree to host the 2002 conference.Κ A final answer was expected at the end of January or early February. (Note: 3M has a new CEO, one of the 2 GE executives that did not get Jack Welchβs job, so final approval is taking a bit longer than thought.)Κ Jeff Hooper spoke to John Rolfes on March 20, and John said that he had been unable to get a response from senior 3M management.Κ This is not a good sign.Κ Jeff asked John to try and get a response one way or the other by Friday, March 23.Κ If we cannot get a response by them we will have to look for another 2002 sponsor, and in this case the 2002 conference is in significant jeopardy.

-         If 3M does go forward to host 2002, Bill Hill will work with them to get them quickly up to speed.Κ Hopefully we can use the same dates as planned for Honeywell.

-          George Box was selected to be honored, but is unable to participate in person due to doctorβs restrictions on his travel.Κ If 3M agrees he will still be honored and we will look into the options to have him present via phone connection.Κ There is also a video that can be shown.

3.Κ Q&PRC Financial Procedures

-Jeff Hooper and LeRoy Franklin had a conference call with Geoff Vining and Steve Porzio to determine the financial procedures for the Q&PRC.Κ The decision was made to have Q&PRC establish its own tax-exempt status (501 c [3]), and to have its own separate finances.Κ These conference finances would be the complete responsibility of the Q&PRC, but it is possible that the ASA Finance Office would handle the operations of these finances for the Q&PRC for a fee.Κ LeRoy has secured the necessary IRS forms for Q&PRC to apply for their own tax-exempt status independent of ASA, and Jeff and LeRoy have begun the application process. Jeff and LeRoy to have made sufficient progress on the IRS tax exempt status application that Steve Porzio recommended to the ASA Board of Directors that the 2001 conference proceed financially using the same procedures as the 2000 conference. If requested at some future date, Steve Porzio would bring up to the ASA board the possibility of the ASA finance office performing the financial operations functions, but with no responsibility for the finances, for the Q&PRC for a fee.Κ But regardless of the ASA board decision on this purely operational issue, the Q&PRC would be financially independent and able to keep operating successfully as it has been for the past 17 years.Κ The other aspects of the Q&PRC relationship with the ASA Q&P section, that is other than the finances, would remain the same.Κ LeRoy has already obtained the Employee Identification Number, a required step in the process, and Jeff and LeRoy have begun filling out the detailed applications.

-Jeff Hooper is completing the IRS tax exempt application, but due to a heavy workload this effort is 3 weeks behind schedule.Κ The new target completion date is April 1.
