Subject: Mary
G. Natrella Scholarship
Hello everyone,
The Quality and Productivity section of the ASA has just established the
Mary G. Natrella Scholarships. Two students who are interested in quality
will be awarded $1000 scholarships to attend the annual Quality and
Productivity Research Conference, which this year will be held in Seattle,
Washington on June 26-28, 2000.
Could you please advertise the scholarships as extensively as possible at
your university? You can post the scholarship description given below, and
announce it in classes. The January 2000 issue of Amstat News has
additional information on page 47, in the Q&P Section
News.
Thanks a lot, and best regards,

MARY G. NATRELLA SCHOLARSHIP
FOR SEATTLE QUALITY CONFERENCE
Veronica Czitrom
The Quality and Productivity section has established the endowed Mary G.
Natrella Scholarship Fund to award two students interested in Quality with
$1,000 each to attend the yearly Q&P Research Conference.
This year's QPRC will be held in Seattle, Washington on June 26-28, 2000.
It will be held jointly with the Spring Research Conference on Statistics in
Industry and Technology, sponsored by the SPES section of the ASA and by the
IMS, as the Joint Research Conference on Statistics in Quality, Industry,
and Technology. The joint conference will be hosted by The Boeing Company
on the campus of the University of Washington. The theme of the conference
is Statistical Methods for the New Millennium. Additional conference
information is available at http://www.boeing.com/jrc2000, or by contacting
Rita Lai at rita.a.lai@boeing.com, or Andrew Booker at
andrew.j.booker@boeing.com.
Master's and doctoral students interested in Quality can apply for a Mary G.
Natrella scholarship to attend the conference in Seattle. Women and master's
level students are especially encouraged to apply. The scholarship money
covers conference registration, conference workshops, housing, meals, and
transportation.
To apply for a scholarship, a professor should nominate a promising student
through an email application to czitrom@lucent.com. The student should
provide a short application (around one page long) which includes a
statement of professional goals and courses that support interest in Q&P.
The student's application should include a paragraph from the supporting
professor. Students from the Seattle area are NOT eligible for the Mary G.
Natrella Scholarship, since they can apply for the scholarships provided by
the QPRC (see the conference web site).
The Mary G. Natrella Scholarship applications should be submitted on or
before February 29, 2000. Scholarship winners will be notified by the end
of April. For additional information, please contact Veronica Czitrom at
czitrom@lucent.com, or at (407) 371-7402.
The Mary G. Natrella Fund Committee was formed at the Joint Statistical
Meetings in Baltimore last August. The committee members are Veronica
Czitrom (chair), Karen Kafadar, Carroll Croarkin, Eileen Boardman, and LeRoy
Franklin (Q&P Treasurer).

Call for Papers
Joint Research Conference on Statistics in Quality, Industry and
Technology (http://www.boeing.com/jrc2000.)
The 17th Quality and Productivity Research Conference and 7th Spring
Research Conference on Statistics in Industry and Technology will be
held jointly at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, June
26-28, 2000.
Call for Contributed Papers:
Abstracts for contributed papers must be sent to Thomas Tosch
(thomas.j.tosch@boeing.com) by February 15, 2000. Submission is by
ASCII email using an IMS template
(http://www.boeing.com/special/jrc2000/template.htm or
http://www.stat.uconn.edu/~ims/abstracts/instruct.html). We encourage
submittals by graduate students. Up to six student scholarships of
$300 will be available to cover registration and local expenses.
Recipients will be selected based on submitted abstracts and their
adherence to the conference theme. If you wish to be considered for a
student scholarship, please so indicate with your submitted abstract.
More information can be found at http://www.boeing.com/jrc2000.
Conference Goal:
The goal of the conference is to stimulate interdisciplinary research
among statisticians, engineers, and physical scientists in quality and
productivity, industrial and technology needs, and the physical and
engineering sciences. The conference will emphasize research and
development driven by important applications, and will look to
identify new application areas where statistics can have a significant
impact. The conference will feature presentations by scientists and
engineers for statisticians and presentations by statisticians for
scientists and engineers.
Technical Program:
The technical program of the conference is in development and will
include invited and contributed papers. The invited program currently
includes a follow-up session on Six Sigma from the very successful
1999 Q&P Research conference sponsored by General Electric, and
sessions on methods for analyzing large (real-time) data sets,
monitoring multivariate control charts and dynamical systems,
experimental design for dispersion effects, factor screening and
response surface exploration, computer experiments, statistics in
aviation safety, measurement systems analysis for two- and
three-dimensional data, statistical issues in the testing of military

systems, statistical challenges in computational biology and
chemistry, methods for univariate and multivariate calibration, and
risk analysis transportation statistics. Plenary speakers include
David Heckerman from Microsoft Research and Geoffrey Vining from
Virginia Tech.
Short Course:
Experiments: Planning, Analysis, and Parameter Design Optimization
Instructor: Professor C. F. Jeff Wu, University of Michigan
This one-day course will be based on the book (with the same title) by
Jeff Wu and Mike Hamada which will be published by John Wiley in March
of 2000. The short course notes (based on the book) will be made
available to the participants. This book contains many new methods not
found in existing textbooks, and covers more than 80 data sets and 200
exercises. The new tools covered include robust parameter design, use
of minimum aberration criterion for optimal factor assignment,
orthogonal arrays of economic run size, analysis strategies to exploit
interactions, experiments for reliability improvement, and analysis of
experiments with non-normal responses. The course will cover basic
tools and illustrate them with data from real experiments. There will
be time reserved for questions and discussions. More information will
be avialable at the JRC2000 web site http://www.boeing.com/jrc2000.
An ASA sponsored LearnSTAT course on June 29, 2000:
"Designing and Using Customer Satisfaction and Relationship Surveys"
by Susan Devlin. More information at

Hello everyone,
Here is the revised budget, Rob, Jeff, you already have
it but I was too lazy to take you of the distribution list.
<<JRC_2000_Budget.XLS>>
Please note that the budget has been adjusted so that we
will need 15 registered students to cover the costs. Our web page should
be updated with vast amounts of new information some time early next week.
The bank account issues have been resolved. Thanks for all of your input
and support!
