Action Items from Conference Call

Previous action items, still incomplete, with comments

112.C. Morgan. Need champion for interactions with other organizations. Try Stu Hunter first., then AmStat News.

* no updated info on this.

** (6/97) (by E-mail after the call) C. has just gotten information on contacting Stu. She will try to reach him soon.

*** (8/97) Terry Ziemer (Minitab) and Stefan Steiner (U. Waterloo) have volunteered. CM will still contact Stu.

**** (10/97 CM) no response from Stu. Still working with TZ and SS.

***** (2/98 CM) Still no response from Stu. SS looking for connection with INFORMS. However, he doesn't think he'll be attending these meetings. T. Boardman will see Stu in March and discuss with Stu. In the meantime, C. Morgan will prepare an article on this for AmStat News.

129. R. Hoerl. Include in Chair's responsibility to send out list of Q&P meetings and events at JSM

*(10/97 RH). OK. He will do.

** (2/98 RH). Still pending.

133.E. Walker. Take up publishing Snee's article (replaces item #63). Possibilities include a shortened article in newsletter or a detailed abstract there, with pointer to the Web. May be easiest for E. W. to edit, then send to Snee for approval.

136.T. Boardman. Talk to Stu Hunter re item #112. ("Need champion for interactions with other organizations.")

* (10/98) unable to reach Stu via e-mail. He will try to phone him again

New action items

(These also include action items from above when the responsibility has shifted to another person.)

From the Executive Committee Meeting

142. All. If your job has a job description in the Q&P Operating Manual (on the Web page): Send changes in your job description to Lynne. If no changes are needed, send him a "no update needed" message. Due by October 1.
* (10/98) L. Moore. Senior Newsletter Editor - not in OM. Lisa has a job description from SPES, but they do not yet have an OM. She will send on to SPES.
* (10/98) L. Hare. VC, CM, JV, RH, Wlet, EricL, Rfri, Ramon, Sdev, Lhare, Tboard. Others-please do ASAP (JV-send note)

146. L. Vance. Send J. Voelkel a summary, by e-mail if possible, about the CoS meetings at the JSM.

148. J. Voelkel. Try to find a Q&P/Stat-Div liaison at the FTC.

149. All. Submit the names of worthy candidates for the 1999 Fellows nominations to Joe Skwish (pqmjns@pccvax.dnet.dupont.com)

From the Tactical Planning Meeting

149. (G. Vining) Plan to

150. (S. Devlin and V. Czitrom) Characterize Q&P members by jobs, degrees, geography.
* (10/98) VC sent SD list of all Q&P members (paper list).

* (10/98, submitted by Susan after the conf. call). ASA told me that they can not do any membership breakdowns for Q&P. I did not get the paper list of members from Veronica until 10/10. (The package looked like it had been around the world a few times.) I am tabulating by hand sex, geographic area and whether employer is academic institution, business, government, etc. I am about 3/4 through my tally. I should be able to send a report in about 1 week.

151. (E. Walker) Examine Newsletter for improvements

152. (E. Lagergren, L. Vance) Are E-mail lists available for members?

153. (L. Gill and E. Walker) See about offering Q&P members a choice for whether they want only an electronic copy of the newsletter.

154. (L. Gill) See about adding Q&P Research Conference abstracts to the Section Proceedings (yes??). This would provide a link to these authors. Also see about adding the abstracts to the home page (yes??).
* (10/98) SS-Q&P people were invited to contr their papers in the JSM proceedign.
* (10/98) Tom Boardme will contact Ai-Chu to add the abstracts. JOV will find the 99 Q&P person to do this as part of the process

156. (E. Walker) "Reader's Digest" material

* (10/98) OK

147. All. If you have ideas on volunteers, let the Nominating Committee know.

* (10/98) VC. Marcus Jobe is willing to help, from JSM Mixer.

* (10/98) OK. done

155. (J. Hooper, L. Gill, V. Czitrom) How to evolve the Q&P Research Conference to be as well known as the FTC-publicity issues?
* (10/98) VC - ongoing. "done"

157. (S. Devlin) Q&P curriculum

_ What is ASA doing for curriculum development?

_ How can we influence the Q&P portion of it?

* (10/98) (Submitted after the conference call). ASA is exploring two types of new CE efforts. One is for K-12. The other is outreach. Lynne Hare as chair and I are on a committee to plan the planning for outreach. It is too soon to report how the outcome might effect Q&P. At least we are well represented.

Updates, Committee Chairs

Tactical Planning Meeting - Tom

Not much work done here yet. The results of our Tactical Planning Meeting are reflected in the action items from the Executive Committee. Geoff Vining will be working on another revision of the Mission and Vision Statements originally developed prior to the Research Conference in Santa Rosa in May, and then modified at the Tactical Planning Meeting.

After discussion of the term "Statistical Thinking," Q&P decided we needed to develop a Glossary to define the contents of this term. Tom agreed during the conference call to begin work on this task.

Secretary. Joe

Nothing to report.

Operating Manual. L. Hare

See action items above

1998 JSM Program. Eric Lagergren.

No report.

Membership. Ron Fricker

(sent after the meeting)

The new Q&P brochures have been printed and were distributed at the 1998 JSM. They are also being included in all new ASA member's packages by the ASA office. The new brochures depart from the old design by using a separate insert for the officer's names.

These inserts can easily be changed so that the officer listing can be updated yearly without having to reprint the entire brochure. One thousand brochures were printed with inserts for the 1998 officers and one thousand were printed without inserts.

1999 JSM Program. Dan McCarville

No report.

1999 Q&P Research Conference. J. Hooper.

(Lisa Gill). The 1999 conference on 5/19-21 is sponsored by GE and RPI, on 6-sigma quality and beyond.

Continuing Ed.

This is a vacant position. Veronica will contact Marcus Jobe (from JSM Mixer).

Publications. S. Schiller.

For the Q&P proceedings, ASA should have sent their requests to authors. Any articles for AmStat News? Due date for December is Nov 1. Let Susannah know within the week. Susannah asked Veronica to do the Chair's report for January, by the end of November

Newsletter. L. Moore

Cost figures were sent out by e-mail yesterday. Lisa needs material by Oct 25 for the December issue

Associate Newsletter/Mini-paper editor. Esteban.

no report.

Web. R León.

no report.

Council of Sections. G. Vining and L. Vance.

no report.

Committee to Nominate Fellows. C. Morgan.

(Report sent after the conf. call)

There is not much to report on the Nominations Committee. Carolyn would like to confirm that the current members of the committee are

_ John Cornell

_ Robert Lundegard

_ Carolyn Morgan

_ Joseph Skwish

Carolyn has served as chair for several years and it may be appropriate to have a new chair, likely Joe. It is time to start identifying new fellow candidates.

The committee would like for members to submit the names of worthy candidates for the 1999 Fellows nominations. Please send your nominations to one of the committee members so that we can identify individuals to serve as nominators.

Nominations committee - Tom

Got a late start, with Geoff and Lisa in Dallas. Has been making phone calls, but many have declined. Chair-Elect, Program Chair-Elect, Council of Sections to be filled. Hopes to be done by middle of next week.

Treasury - Susan

Tom received revised budget in September from Susan and submitted it to ASA office last month.

(submitted by Susan after the meeting)

_ We got a very nice thank you from the Gordon Research Conferences for our donation.

_ I got the 1999 final budget out on time.

_ There is no new financial information to report on.
