Expansion to Action Item 36

Original Item

36. L. Hare Send a report on "moderated discussions" via E-mail when results are gotten.
** so far, little luck doing this through NIST. R. Leon suggested that he will be able to do so at some point with his server.

*** 36 OK. part of SPES plan

Expanded Item

This is in reference to "Moderated Discussions on the Web." The current status is: NIST is experimenting with software that will permit an individual, Joan Rosenblatt, to moderate discussions on various topics of interest to Q&P members. As pilot discussion sets, Joan has chosen "Massive Data Sets" and "Non-Numeric Data." Discussants interested in topics concerning statistical methods for finding structure in massive data sets could ask questions or provide answers to questions posed in this discussion. Similarly for those interested in statistical treatment of non-numeric data such as shapes and charts. Once we are comfortable with the internal pilot program, we will advertise the URL on the Q&P Web page, in AMStat News and elsewhere to encourage participation. Assuming this effort is sucessful, we will seek other experts to moderate discussion sessions on Q&P-related topics of their choice.

Expansion to Item 15 and 16

1996 Q&P Research Conference

The 1996 Q&P Research Conference, held May 29-31, 1996 in Gaithersburg, Maryland, was sponsored by NIST and DuPont and was organized jointly with the SPES/IMS Spring Research Conference. The conference experimented with contributed paper sessions for the first time, and these were very successful in attracting young researchers. Also we continued our student support with 25 students offered 40% support and 5 students offered 100% support. These efforts greatly increased student participation. The conference was also our largest with 210 participants. The final conference satisfaction survey and budget will be available later in August, and the fifth update of the conference manual will be available in September.

1997 Q&P Research Conference

The 1997 Q&P Research Conference will be held May 12-14 in Orlando, Florida sponsored by Lucent Technologies Microelectronics and the University of Central Florida. Veronica Czitrom is the Organizing Committee Chair.

1998 Q&P Research Conference

The 1998 Q&P Research Conference will be held May 21-22 in Palo Alto, California sponsored by Hewlett Packard and Stanford University. Ai Chu Wu is the Organizing Committee Chair.

1999 Q&P Research Conference

Sponsors are being sought for the 1999 Q&P Research Conference. If you are interested in sponsoring the 1999 please call Jeff Hooper on 201-606-2471.

Q&P Proceedings

Invitations to submit a paper to the Q&P Proceedings should be sent to all speakers at Q&P sponsored conferences, such as the Q&P Research Conference, or sessions, such as those at the JSM. These invitations will be sent by the ASA office if the conference or session organizer sends the speaker names and addresses to the ASA Q&P Section Liaison Officer.
