STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

Once again the Section on Statistics and the Environment isannouncing a student paper competition. With many excitingapplications of statistics in the environmental fields, the sectionis encouraging student authors to describe their work and presenttheir results at the annual Statistical meetings in Baltimore thissummer. Since many papers are jointly authored, and lots ofexcellent scholastic research stems from student/faculty teams,paper that have multiple authors are acceptable. The only catch isa student must be the lead author. If there is more than onestudent author, the prize will be shared equally. And the prize ...in addition to national recognition, the winner receives $100, acertificate suitable for framing, and another $100 to be used tosupport travel to the Baltimore meetings if the winner attends.

The deadline for this year's competition is March 15, 1999,; sostart those pens, pencils, and word processors rolling now! Papersmust be submitted by the deadline to:

Detailed rules for the competition may be found on the section Website (www.pnl.gov/statenvi). Several past and present officers ofthe Section will serve as judges for the competition. AS you willnoter from the rules, papers will be reviewed with the first pageremoved to be certain that the judges do not recognize the author.Similarly, the judges will not decide the winner by flipping afair coin, flipping a biased coin, or flipping a new Andrew Jackson$20 bill.
