As we start the new year it seems timely to announce the 1998 student papercompetition. The deadline for submission of papers is 1 May 1998, andpapers should be submitted to the Section's past chair, George Casella at434 Warren Hall, Biometrics Unit, Cornell University,Ithaca NY 14850. Rules for this year's competition will be posted on ourwebsite <http://www.pnl.gov/statenvi/> in the near future. Recognizing the fact that muchgood work in environmental statistics is conducted jointly with others, multiply authored papers this year may be submitted in this competitionprovided that the student is the lead author. If there is more than onestudent author, all will share equally in any award.
