JSM Presentation Award:
The American Statistical Association's Section on Statistics and theEnvironment (ENVR) announces the introduction of a Presentation AwardProgram, to commence at the JSM in Toronto, August 2004. Eligibilityfor the award is open to any individual making a presentation at the JSMin any Contributed platform presentation session (including TopicContributed platform sessions) in which ENVR is the primary sponsor.The individual must satisfy all JSM requirements for contributing andmaking such a presentation, but does not otherwise have to be a member of ENVR.
The winner will be selected based on score sheets filled out byattendees of each primary-sponsored ENVR contributed session. The awardwinner will be named as that individual whose 10% trimmed mean score isbest among score sheets collected from all primary-sponsored ENVRcontributed sessions. A minimum of five (5) votes/scores (prior totrimming) must be recorded in order for a presentation's scores to beincluded in the competition. Ties are permitted. The winner willreceive a certificate of achievement and a cash prize. Announcement ofthe award will be made shortly after the JSM.

Student Paper Award:
The Section on Statistics in the Environment (ENVR) of the ASA issponsoring a student paper competition on the topic of EnvironmentalStatistics. We encourage students to submit papers on their research inthis area. The paper may consist of novel approaches to the analysis ofenvironmental data, new methodology applicable in the area ofenvironmental statistics or application of statistics to environmentalproblems. The selected winner will present his/her paper in acontributed session at the 2004 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) inToronto. A small stipend is included to support student attendance atthe JSM to present the paper.
Eligibility: Anyone who is a student in the Fall of 2003 (undergraduate, Masters, andPh.D.) is eligible to participate.
Entry materials: * The applicant must be the first author of the paper. In addition, aletter must be submitted that verifies the applicant's student statusfrom a faculty member familiar with the student's work and, in the caseof joint authorship, indicates what fraction of the contribution isattributable to the applicant.
* Required format: The paper must be entirely double-spaced (abstract, main body,references, footnotes and appendices), using at least 11 point type withat least 1 inch margins all around and no longer than 26 pages(inclusive).
* All materials should be e-mailed to the address given below by January 5, 2004.
* The applicant must also an abstract by February 1 to ASA and request apresentation in an ENVR session. Applicants must follow all rulesrequired for paper submission and attendance at the JSM.
Submission: Materials must be submitted electronically only in Postscript or PDFformat. All materials must be in English.
Deadline: All application materials MUST BE RECEIVED via e-mail by 5:00 PM EST,January 5, 2004 at the address below.
Review: Papers will be reviewed by the Student Paper Competition Award committeeof the Section on Statistics in the Environment. Selection will be basedon a variety of criteria at the discretion of the selection committee,and will include innovation and significance of contribution, amongstothers. Award(s) will be announced early in 2004. The decision of theselection committee will be final. This award will recognize anenvironmental statistics contribution with a certificate and recognitionat the ASA ENVR section meeting at the JSM.
