As many members know, the ASA Section on Statistics and the Environment(ENVR) actively participates in scientific meetings outside of the JointStatistical Meetings each August. This month, we briefly review some recentand upcoming Section meeting activities.
In October, 2002 the Section sponsored its second stand-alone meeting,"Spatial Statistics: Integrating Statistics, GIS, and Statistical Graphics"held at the University of Washington. This workshop included a shortcourse: "Integrating Geostatistics and GIS" given by Jay Ver Hoef andKonstantin Krivoruchko. The short course sold out, and the workshop waswell-attended by individuals from a wide variety of fields includingstatistics, geography, state environmental agencies, fisheries, and thenational parks (among others). The conference generated approximately$30,000 in revenue for approximately $15,000 in costs yielding the sectionapproximately $15,000 in income from the workshop. This income helpsprovide services not otherwise covered by dues to Section members such asour Section newsletter and planning for future workshops. Heartfelt thanksgo out to the Program Committee (Peter Guttorp, Tony Olsen, Paul Sampson,Jay Ver Hoef, and Lance Waller), to Julie Smith of the EngineeringProfessional Programs at University of Washington for expert guidance, topresenters and participants, and special thanks to Linda Young for leadingthe process from idea to completion.
Turning to the present (almost!), the Eastern North American Region of theInternational Biometric Society's Spring Meetings will be held in Tampa,Florida March 30-April 2 (see www.enar.org for information), and feature several invited sessions cosponsored by ENVR, including:
Spatio-Temporal Modeling of Environmental Processes
Bayesian Hierarchical Spatio-Temporal Methods
Health Effects and Environmental Risk Assessment of Air Pollution
Network Design
In addition to the ENVR co-sponsored sessions, there are also anenvironmental research roundtable luncheon, a GIS/Spatial Statistics shortcourse, and a contributed paper session addressing "Combining DisparateEnvironmental Data", each of which are of likely interest for ENVR members.
Other upcoming meetings co-sponsored or with sessions co-sponsored by ENVR include:
International Statistics Institute (ISI) Conference on Environmental Statistics and Health 16-18 July 2003, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain (http://isi-eh.usc.es/)
