Effective July 1, 1996, by action of the Section Chair, the Section on Statistics and the Environment, American Statistical Association, establishes a Section committee to nominate fellows of the Association, known as the Committee to Nominate Fellows.
Each Committee member shall be a member of the Section. Each Committee member shall serve as Chair of the Committee during their final year of service. The current Section Chair shall nominate one new member each year to replace the retiring member.
The Committee can nominate any current Section member(s) who are not already Fellows as Fellows of the Association. Typically, the Committee will find a suitable sponsor for each nomination who will prepare and submit the nomination package, with a cover letter from the Committee endorsing the nomination for the Section and including pertinent information on the nominee's service to the Section. Alternatively, the Committee may perform the duties of sponsor.
The Committee has authority to make no, one, or more nominations in a particular year, and will advise the Section Chair of its nominations.
The current slate attempts to balance research, education, applications, government, industry, consulting and academia. The current Chair may nominate additional Committee members as (s)he sees fit to meet these and other criteria deemed important, but in no case shall the committee consist of less than three persons.
The current Committee is comprised of Fellows of the Association. This is a proven model but not binding on future nominations.
