Minutes of Minority Committee Conference
Call
July 16, 2003

Welcome: Rob welcomed the c
ommittee to its 2003 inaugural meeting.
Business
- Our CMS Business Meeting
at JSM San Francisco will be held on Monday morning, August 4, from 7:00
am to 8:30 am in the Hilton, Room - Union Square 10. Continental breakfast
will be served.
- Our CMS Reception will be
held on Wednesday Evening, August 6, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the
Nikkon, Room - Monterey II.
- Regarding the reception/mixer,
the committee decided to distribute announcements at the JSM; Debby will
circulate the flyer for all members to print several copies and hand them
out to JSM attendees; Rob will print copies and distribute to various booths
at the JSM, at the Women's Caucus meeting, and at other venues.
- Monica will check to see
if the committee can co-sponsor invited session 439, set for Thursday, 8:30
am to 10:30 am
- Debby continues maintenance
of our Committee web site; one idea is to establish a guest list that can
be used for outreach.
Review of Charge
Rob reviewed the CMS charge,
summarizing it into two activities -- fostering of greater participation
among historically under-represented groups; and encouraging research to
improve the condition of minorities in the US.
2004 Invited Session
The committee was unable to
submit a session into the competition by the July 15 deadline.
Brainstorming Initiatives
A. Contributed Topic Session for 2004
- Prison populations (no assignee)
- Need to collect racial data
(Gladys will work on this)
- Race and multicultural issues
in Canada vs the US (Rob will create an abstract and circulate)
- Look at world poverty - could
lead to emerging new illnesses (no assignee)
- Need for affirmative action
(no assignee)
B. Organize more StatFests
- Florida A&M
- Dr. Sastry Pantula -- NC
C. Participate in related
professional meetings
- ACIS Meeting Call for Papers
-- due in August
- SACNAS Meeting - (too late
for proposals); plan for next year
D. Petition ASA for meaningful
support of StatFests
E. Outreach: Offer free 1-year ASA membership to minority student
Nagambal will
draft a paragraph that the committee can further develop; Monica will check
into receptivity at the ASA.
6. Additional action items
Liaison with others
- Rob will contact Committee on Women & Committee on Career Development
to explore common interests.
Olga is a member of SACNAS; she
will attend the October SACNAS conference as a CMS ambassador and explore
possibilities for outreach.
Bob Bell -- It would be nice
to how to continue the relationships that are established that day.
Nagambal will circulate her STATFEST
concept proposal to the committee to see if there are ideas we can adopt.
