ASA Policy Statement Supporting Minorities in Statistics


A.   Resolved that it is the policy of, the American Statistical Association, that no person, in whatever relationship to the Association, shall be subject to discrimination from Association employees, officers or anyone officially designated by the Association as its representative on the basis of age, race, creed, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, marital or military status.

B.   Resolved that the American Statistical Association supports and encourages ASA membership, ASA leadership, and the Committee on Minorities in Statistics to:
  1. develop and pursue ASA policies which promote multi-cultural diversity and equal opportunity in the statistical profession;
  2. encourage organizations to support programs in minority communities at the elementary, high school, and college levels to develop interest in the statistical profession in these communities;
  3. promote the entry of minority and other dis advantaged populations into the statistical profession;
  4. coordinate information exchange and initiatives on multi-cultural diversity with professional, governmental, and other organizations.
C.   Resolved that the ASA supports the Statement of Principles and Policy Recommendations of the Committee on Minorities in Statistics.

D.   Resolved that the ASA supports and encourages ASA membership, ASA leadership, and the Committee on Minorities in Statistics to:
  1. seek external sources of financial and other support for recruiting minorities into the statistical profession and for training minority statisticians;
  2. support and regularly maintain a directory of minority statisticians;
  3. promote the development of scientific knowledge needed to establish programs or strategies designed to improve the condition of minority populations in the U. S.
  4. promote the implementation and evaluation of intervention methods which are designed to improve conditions among minority populations;
  5. apprise the ASA membership of these issues.
